Duties and responsibilities:

Chiropractors treat patients by manually adjusting parts of the human body, especially the spine. Chiropractors and their patients believe that problems with bone and never alignment can cause illness and problems in other parts of the body, a view not widely accepted by allopathic physicians and others traditional medical practitioners.

Chiropractors manipulate their patients’ spinal columns for treatment. They may prescribe specific diets or exercise, but not drugs. Chiropractic cannot perform surgery.

Most chiropractors establish a private practice and some provide home treatment. Others form group partnerships in clinics or chiropractic hospitals.

Average salary: $30,000 - $100,000

Biomedical Equipment Technician

Duties and Responsibilities:

Biomedical equipment technicians inspect, maintain, and repair different types of medical equipment used to diagnose and treat disease. They perform safety checks and train practitioner to safely operate equipment. Biomedical equipment technology has been one of the fastest growing medical career fields in recent years.

Average Salary:$20,000-$38,000

Educational Requirement:

Students should take challenging science, math, and electronics courses in high school.

Following high school, biomedical equipment technicians complete one to three years of course work in biomedical equipment technology, medical-electronics, or biomedical-engineering. Most programs lead to certifications and/or associate degrees. Some employers will hire electronics technicians and provide on-the-job biomedical technology training.

Educational Requirements:

Students should take the most challenging science, math, English courses available in high school.

All biomedical engineers have at least bachelor’s degree in engineering. Many have advanced graduate degrees as well. Courses of study include a sound background in mechanical, chemical, or industrial engineering and specialized biomedical training. Most programs last from four to six years and all states require biomedical engineers to pass examinations and be licensed.
